The Department of Spatial Planning (DATer) of the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning is responsible for coordinating the territorial impact of governmental and municipal sectoral policies and, in cooperation with municipal actors, for reconciling socio-economic development with the protection of the environment and its natural resources.
The Regional development Service of DATer is looking for a motivated student to undertake an internship on the topic of promoting densification in the Central Agglomeration (Agglo-Centre) of Luxembourg :
INTERNSHIP ON « DENSIFICATION » (M/F)
(duration of the intership 4 to 8 weeks to start as soon as possible)
Purpose and missions
The intership assignment comprises three main tasks:
• Within the framework of the project “DUZAN – Développement urbain et zero artificialisation nette”, the first mission is to work with the municipalities of Bertrange, Leudelange and Schuttrange on creating a database of their most common housing types within the existing building stock (districts to be determined). This work is partially based on the methodology developed in the “Zesumme renovéieren” project of the Klima-Agence in Differdange and Niederanven, but does not need to cover the same level of detail.
• The second mission is to document (including photographic documentation) and analyse the extent to which and the ways in which these housing types have been densified over the last ten years. The documentation and analysis will primarily focus on vertical extensions (additional storeys), building extensions and the conversion of non-residential buildings. The results of the DUZAN project will serve as a basis for this analysis.
• Within the framework of the “Baupotenzial” platform, the third mission is to georeference the densification potential of municipalities within the Agglo-Centre. For the existing urban fabric (Quartiers existants), the DATer is interested in recording, visualising and georeferencing densification potential in terms of the maximum authorised number of residential units in residential or mixed-use zones. These data are currently being extracted from the Detailed Development Plans “Existing Districts” (Plans d’aménagement particuliers “Quartier existant”) and subsequently entered into ArcGIS Pro on the basis of the PDF maps of these plans.

Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Spatial planning, architecture, urban development / urban planning, geography.
Technical skills
• Knowledge of spatial planning, architecture and urban planning, urban and regional development, or geography.
Personal skills
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Methodical and rigorous working approach.
• Strong analytical skills.
Languages
• Proficiency in spoken and written French or German is required
• Proficiency in spoken and written Luxembourgish, English is considered an asset.
